Fairtrade Fortnight 2008

A group of students performed a "playlet" on the theme of Fairly Traded Cotton at the Lord Mayor's Fairtrade Civic Reception at the Jubilee Hall on Wednesday 5th March. Stoke-on-Trent is a "Fairtrade City", and the Lord Mayor is the patron of the Stoke-on-Trent Fairtrade Group. This reception is part of Stoke-on-Trent's annual participation in Fairtrade Fortnight.

The group gave a performance highlighting the different attitudes of people from the rich Northern countries towards clothing - designer brands, cheap supermarket clothing, reused clothing and Fairtrade clothing. They discovered that the designer brands and the cheap supermarket brands of t-shirts and jeans were usually made in the same sweatshops in the South (in this case India and Mexico). The message that came across was - if you can afford Fairtrade clothing, buy it; if not, buy used clothing in second-hand shops.

This was a very creative and enjoyable performance - especially the "three-minute flights" accross the globe!

We hope that Haywood will continue and develop its Fairtrade links.
